Re-Imagining Black Religious Identity: Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality:
Second National Conference of the African American Roundtable Project

The African American Roundtable Project of The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry at Pacific School of Religion will host its second Souls a' Fire Conference entitled: "Re-Imagining Black Religious Identity: Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality," on June 23-25 at The Chicago Theological Seminary in Chicago. The Conference will consist of a number of panels and roundtables covering topics including:

"How We Got Over May Not ‘Necessarily’ be How We’ll Get Through," with Reverend Lynice Pinkard. This opening worship and the reception to follow are free and open to the public, at University Church United Church of Christ

"Wrapped Up, Tied Up, and Tangle Up: The Politics of Aesthetic Maleness, Masculinity, and Charisma in Black Religious Culture," a panel of African-American men across academic disciplines and religious denominations

"Unholy Ghosts: Decolonizing the Churches of our Youth;" a panel of pastors, ministers, and leaders discuss the danger of replicating systems of oppression in the name of liberation

"Don’t Leave it to Beaver: Gender Construction, Misogyny, and Homo-Negativity in the Church's Version of the Family"

"Reclaiming Stonewall: Issues at the Intersection of Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality"

General admission to Friday and Saturday events is $35 .

A special conference rate of $119 for a single or double room has been arranged with the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza. Shuttle service will be available between the Holiday Inn and Chicago Theological Seminary and University Church UCC/DOC, where conference events will be held. To reserve a room, call the Holiday Inn at 312-836-5000 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Central Time. Refer to the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry (CLGS) block of rooms.
