"If you are coming to Portland for General Assembly I invite you to stop by the discernment booth. If you are willing to give a couple of hours of your time while at GA chances are good I will have a job for you." -Karen Barr, Co-team leader, Discernment ministry Team.
In recent months the Discernment Ministry Team has focused on getting ready for General Assembly. The team has planned two resource groups on discernment and will be staffing a booth in the exhibit hall to promote Discernment. The Office of the General Minister and President (OGMP) is sponsoring these activities and the team has been given the opportunity to shape what will be presented.
Since the last GA the team has been present at 6 regional assemblies. This has ranged from exhibits to workshops to handing out brochures.
Plans for the future depend upon Resolution 0514* and how the OGMP decides to implement it . The Discernment process is an initiative of the General Assembly, not GLAD, and the responsibility for promoting use of the discernment process rests with the general church. However, the Discernment Ministry Team has been integral in promoting discernment to Disciples across the country.
Whatever changes the OGMP makes in response to Resolution 0514, the team anticipates a further need for people in regions and local congregation who can speak to and participate in the process. Contact Karen Barr (kbarr@gladalliance.org), team leader, for more information.
