Casey Williams, a seminarian at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA, is gathering ordination stories from Disciples clergy and seminarians. She writes:
OUT in Seminary
My name is Casey Williams and I am a student at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. I will be receiving my Masters in Divinity as well as a Certificate in Sexuality and Religion in May 2006. For my final project in receiving this certificate, I am compiling together stories from those of us in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer and who have gone through the process of ordination or are currently in seminary preparing for ordination and ministry.
I chose to do this book project for the sake of preserving the stories and the histories of GLBTQ people who are either currently in seminary or have already attended one. Far too often queer histories are lost or never told within the institutional lives of religious organizations; I hope this project will help to address that serious oversight.
What I am looking for are personal stories. Stories that can tell others what it was like being GLBTQ in your region and attending seminary. There are stories out there that are full of triumph, as well as stories that tell of the heartaches experienced by our denomination. I want to hear your story, the good or the bad. If you do not feel comfortable publishing your name, feel free to write your story anonymous, but please give me your name and contact information in case I need to get a hold of you.
It is my hope that someday I will get this book published in order to show all of the regions within the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) the gifts for ministry GLBTQ people have, our love for this denomination and how much hurt and frustration we experience when we are denied our gift.
