GMP Appoints Group to Develop Strategies for Continuing Discernment

The 2005 General Assembly passed a resolution supported by GLAD requiring the office of general minister and president to create a group that would strategize about creative ways to continue the discernment process of hearing God's will for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in its ministry to and with gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual Disciples.

Sharon Watkins, general minister and president, has appointed a very diverse group representing the breadth of perspectives and experiences throughout the Church.

The group will be chaired by Doug Skinner, a Disciples pastor from Dallas, Texas, who helped write "Listening to the Spirit," the Church's first major effort in the process of discernment.  Karen Barr, team leader of GLAD's Discernment Ministry Team, is also serving the church as part of this group.

The group gathered for it's first meeting in Indianapolis Jan. 5-6 at Christian Theological Seminary and is expected to report to the General Assembly and other bodies where that may be helpful.
